Recent robberies at two Greater Toronto Area jewellery stores reveal critical weaknesses in physical security systems. On October 18 at around 6:30 p.m., a Mississauga store on Derry Road faced a vehicle-assisted heist.

A white crossover vehicle rammed backward into a jewelry store, enabling up to nine suspects to enter. The total value of goods taken remains unknown.

Despite bollards along the store’s front, a wide gap on the left side allowed the vehicle to reach the entrance.

Two days later, another jewelry store in the GTA faced an attempted robbery near Wilson Avenue and Keele Street in North York. A young woman, pretending to be a customer, held the entry door open, letting several suspects into the lobby.

The group tried to break through a second security door with hammers. The owner kept the door shut and locked an inner metal gate, blocking the suspects from entering further.

After about a minute, the suspects gave up and left. Staff called the police, leading to the arrest and charging of four young male suspects shortly after.

These events highlight the need for multiple security layers in jewelry stores. Physical barriers like bollards can deter vehicle attacks but must cover all vulnerable areas without gaps.
