Your submission might spark industry buzz

The American Gem Trade Association’s Spectrum & Cutting Edge Awards don’t just hand out trophies. They hand out opportunities.

Every year, designers and gem cutters submit pieces to the competition. Some win. Many don’t. But the real prize isn’t the gala or the magazine spread—it’s the quiet moment an editor spots a ring, a pendant, or a carved stone and decides it’s the next big thing.

“Every year we look forward to the Spectrum & Cutting Edge Awards because they truly change lives and raise careers,” said John W. Ford, Sr., CEO of AGTA. “It’s exciting to watch all the entries pour into the office and wonder who might win. But even if a piece doesn’t officially place in the competition, it will receive a lot of attention from editors, many of whom write about entrants and their designs.”

The competition that keeps giving

Winners get the obvious perks: a feature in Prism magazine, a spot at the awards gala during AGTA GemFair Tucson, and social media tags. But the coverage that matters most isn’t guaranteed. Editors scroll through every entry, whether it placed or not, looking for what’s fresh. A piece that didn’t crack the winner’s circle might still end up in a trend roundup, a buyer’s guide, or a designer profile—seen by tens of thousands of people who never knew it was part of a contest.

The competition is divided into categories that cover nearly every corner of the industry. Seven Spectrum categories span bridal wear to engagement rings. Eight Cutting Edge categories include faceting, carving, and other techniques. Separate special and sponsored awards have their own judges.

Two new categories debut in 2026. The Innovative Design Award targets pieces with a wholesale cost under $10,000, lowering the barrier for standout creativity. The Stuller Color of the Year Award honors the best use of 2026’s Signature Red.

Who can enter—and what it costs

Submissions are open to all designers, cutters, and companies in the U.S. and Canada. AGTA membership isn’t required. Early bird pricing runs until September 25, with the final deadline on October 9.

For many entrants, the real value isn’t the trophy. It’s the chance to be seen by the people who shape the industry. A single write-up in a trade publication or a mention shared for tens of thousands of eyes to see can lead to wholesale orders or a surge in direct sales. The competition doesn’t just reward skill—it rewards visibility, and that’s something no judge can guarantee.

Most designers know this. They don’t enter for the award. They enter for the shot at being the piece everyone’s talking about—even if they never make it to the stage.

It’s not about winning. It’s about being noticed. And in an industry where trends move fast and attention spans are short, that can make all the difference.

The awards gala is just the beginning. The real story happens after the cameras leave.
