As a result, George Brown has seen affected admission volumes, cohort sizing, seat planning, and operational capacity across Ontario colleges.

Starting with the 2027-28 academic year, George Brown Polytechnic will halt enrollments in all jewellery-related programs due to federal student policy shifts and financial sustainability challenges. This move stems from a 2025 review assessing the viability of its Jewellery offerings.

The Polytechnic said recent analysis confirmed that the current delivery model is not sustainable, given the programs’ financial and operational position and changing sector conditions. Federal changes affecting international student admissions have also contributed to uncertainty around enrolment and planning.

These changes include modifications to study-permit volumes, Provincial Attestation Letter requirements, and Post-Graduation Work Permit eligibility. As a result, George Brown has seen affected admission volumes, cohort sizing, seat planning, and operational capacity across Ontario colleges.

The suspension means there will be no new intake for Jewellery Essentials, Jewellery Methods, Jewellery Arts, or Gemmology for the 2027-28 admissions cycle. Current students will continue to be supported through a teach-out plan, allowing them to complete their credentials.

George Brown will continue to offer required courses where possible and provide alternative support, such as approved course equivalents or substitutions, to ensure students can complete their programs. Existing student services, including Academic Advising and Financial Aid & Awards, will remain available.

The institution is exploring partnerships and alternative delivery models for future jewellery education, consulting its Program Advisory Committee and seeking industry input on hiring needs and emerging skills. No future delivery model has been approved, but the suspension does not constitute a formal closure of the programs or jewellery education at the Polytechnic.

George Brown will continue consulting with industry partners, encouraging them to support students through placements and work-integrated learning during the teach-out period. The Polytechnic aims to ensure a smooth transition for current students while exploring options for the future of its jewellery programs.
