Jewellery stores targeted in Canadian mall thefts

Canadian malls have seen a recent surge in jewellery store thefts, with multiple incidents reported across the country in late May and early June 2026. Authorities are investigating these crimes, which have resulted in significant property loss and damage.

An armed robbery occurred at a jewellery retailer in Lynden Park Mall in Brantford, Ont., on May 30, 2026, at approximately 9:25 a.m. A lone male allegedly stole an undisclosed quantity of jewellery and cash before fleeing the scene.

A grab-and-run theft was reported at a jewellery retailer in Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, Ont., on June 1, 2026, at approximately 2:45 p.m. An individual was shown a gold chain and allegedly fled the premises after taking possession of the item.

No additional details regarding the suspect or the value of the loss are available in the Newmarket case. In contrast, the Brantford incident has more information available, including a suspect description and photograph, which were published by local media.

A jewellery retailer in Fonthill, Ont., was targeted in a break-in on June 8, 2026. Two individuals wearing motorcycle helmets forced entry into the store using a crowbar, smashing display cases and causing damage to glass fixtures and equipment.

The suspects remained inside for about two minutes before leaving in a dark-coloured sedan. The incident resulted in stolen merchandise and property damage, although the exact value of the loss has not been disclosed.

A similar break-in occurred at a jewellery retailer in Chinook Mall in Calgary, Alta., on June 8, 2026. An unknown individual, possibly female, entered the store through a rear door and allegedly forced open a security cage used to secure inventory.

The individual removed an undisclosed quantity of jewellery before leaving the premises roughly 10 minutes later. Police attended the scene and are continuing their investigation.

These incidents show that jewellery stores in malls can be vulnerable to theft.

Police are working to gather more information about the suspects and the circumstances surrounding each incident.

The jewellery industry has seen its share of thefts and robberies in the past, and these recent incidents serve as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and retailers, similar to how Saks has moved forward after bankruptcy approval.
